Scooter Rally Photos: Luscious Lambrettas.

A selection of images from the ongoing documentary project Mods in Motion: A Scooter Culture Documentary, a photographic project that seeks to capture the vibrant essence of scooter rallies and the enduring legacy of Lambretta and Vespa scooters.

Lambretta, Then and Now

In 1947, Italian industrialist Ferdinando Innocenti established Lambretta in Milan. The name was inspired by the Lambrate suburb, where the factory was located, and the adjacent river Lambro.

Lambretta scooters featured clean lines, polished chrome, and a distinctive look. They became closely associated with the Mod subculture in Britain during the 1960s. Mods, characterised by stylish attire and green parkas and adopted Lambretta and Vespa scooters as their preferred mode of transport.

Mods embraced Lambrettas as symbols of Italian style and sophistication. The scooters perfectly complemented the Mod look, and their popularity soared during the 1960s.

Lambretta’s legacy endures, many restored scooters are still cherished and they are were popular during the Mod revival of the 1980s and continue to be popular among scooter enthusiasts.

Annual Scooter Rally Ballintoy Northern Ireland

Annually in September, the Gathering of the Clans Scooter Rally takes place on the Causeway Coast of Northern Ireland. A weekend programme of events takes place at Kelly's Hotel complex in Portrush. On the Saturday afternoon, a ride out of classic scooters takes place to the nearby and picturesque Ballintoy Harbour. A range of Lambretta, Vespa, Scomadi and Royal Alloy scooters take part.
