Abberton Reservoir is an expansive pumped storage freshwater reservoir spanning 700 hectares. The majority of its water source is derived through pumping from the River Stour.

The reservoir played a strategic role during World War II having served as a training ground for the renowned No. 617 Squadron, aka "The Dam Busters," as they practiced bombing runs in preparation for their mission targeting the German dams in the Ruhr.

Renowned for its ecological importance, the reservoir serves as a breeding ground for cormorants, a sanctuary for wintering waterfowl, and a crucial stopover for migrating birds.
